Statement of Legitimacy

Kuniba-Kai International is the only organization recognized and authorized by the Japan Karate-Do Federation and the World Karate-Do Federation to teach and promote certified ranks in the style of Karate-Do known as Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu.  Other organizations stating a connection to Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu exist, but they represent older versions of the style and cannot claim currency or legitimate succession to the style created and taught by the late Soke Shogo Kuniba.

Kuniba-Kai International maintains exclusive rights to Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do, Kuniba-Ryu Kobudo, Kuniba-Ryu Iaido, and Kuniba-Ryu Goshin-Do.  The use of the terms Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do, Kuniba-Ryu Kobudo, Kuniba-Ryu Iaido, and/or Kuniba-Ryu Goshin-Do in whole or in part by persons and/or organizations not affiliated with Kuniba-Kai International is not recognized or authorized.

Non-affiliated organizations, dojo, and individuals should not use the Kuniba family history to claim legitimacy of their style; nor should they display photographs of Soke Shogo Kuniba in their dojo or on their web page to imply legitimacy.

The Fuji no Mon (Wisteria Crest) is the insignia of the Kokuba/Kuniba family.  As such, it has been prominently featured in the patch of the Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Seishin-Kai and its legitimate successor organization, the Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Kuniba-Kai.  Other organizations that have incorporated the Fuji no Mon into their logo have done so without permission.  With the exception of the historical Seishin-Kai and the current Kuniba-Kai, inclusion of the Fuji no Mon into martial arts patches, emblems, or seals implies no real connection to the Kokuba/Kuniba family and/or its style of Karate-Do.

Concerns about misrepresentations and/or questions about legitimacy should be directed to the attention of Kuniba-Kai International.
